Two of the following questions will be randomly chosen at the start of the exam You will then select one and write a complete, direct, and well organized answer.
1. Respond critically to the
statement that "UN peacekeeping operations are a perfect example of the
organization's general and absolute failure to enhance international peace and
security." (While you must discuss what peacekeeping is and what it has
accomplished, you need not confine your response to just peacekeeping actions by
the UN).
2. "The promotion and
protection of human rights has become one of the UN's more prominent
activities." Evaluate the UN
record. What obstacles exist to further successes? Are they any solutions to
these problems?
3. Review the growth of
economic development as an IGO goal and then evaluate the progress to date,
noting successes, failures, problems, and prospects.
4. As the senior foreign policy White House staff member of newly elected President, you have been assigned the task of analyzing the proposed creation of a World Environmental Organization. The President wants to know whether or not it will improve the situation and why or why not.
5. Evaluate Chadwick Alger’s analysis of the UN system, especially his 3 major suggestions for achieving the potential of the UN system summarized on page 504 of Diehl, The Politics of Global Governance.
6. Compare and contrast the roles of international organizations in 2007 and 2057. There is no absolutely right answer, but there are poorly supported and organized responses. A good answer should be cognizant of past performance successes and failures and the reasons for both (e.g., if past limitations have been due to a system characteristic, is there any reason to expect that characteristic will change).
