Global Governance
Scenario 2:
In scenario number two, the world moves a little closer to
the concept of a world government, but global governance is still maintained by
IGOs. However, rather than just using the UN as the only IGO with a large
scope, nations take a different approach. Regional, federalist IGOs are
created, much like the EU, to represent the different demographics across the
world. The world sees the rise of the EU, the North American Union (NAU), the Union of South American Nations (USAN), the AU, the
United Arab States (UAS), and the Pan-Asian Coalition (PAC). These
organizations consist of federations of nation-states within their respective
regions. Like the EU, these federalist entities retain a good deal of
individual state sovereignty. However, they also have a supranational
government entity that governs the region as a whole, with respect to the
region’s economic, environmental, and military interests. Cooperation
among states is emphasized to meet these supranational goals. Everything else
is left to the individual member states, with regards to public policy.
Boarders are open and trade is free among regional members. The UN acts more as
a mediator of the discussions between these transnational entities.
