Security Threat: North Korea

North Korean Flag

  Introduction

After the USSR boycott of the United Nations, the UN Security Council ordered troops to quell tensions between North and South. The war ended in a truce, leaving a United States and UN presence there ever since to buffer the border between the Communist North and the Democratic South. North Korea has been a thorn in the International Communities side ever since. Kim Jung Il, North Koreas supreme leader has vied for power in the region since the death of his father Kim Il Sung. Consistently North Korea has taken hard-line stance with the international community, often times leading to sanctions and isolation. Recently, North Korea shocked the world by developing the country’s first atomic device in 2006. The United States has not only labeled North Korea an “axis of evil” but has struggled since the Clinton Administration to really achieve any concessions from the isolated nation. The international community is not only concerned about a nuclear North Korea but also its influence on South Korea. Currently North Korea has meet with international and regional powers to discuss its future in a more globalized world.
