During Spring Semester 2007, Professor Dannehl is teaching PLS 305, "Topics in Comparative Government." The title of the course is "Comparative Political Film." The course focuses primarily on state-society and interpersonal relations under conditions of authoritarian rule, although we discuss challenges to political authority as well. Since PLS 305 is part of the comparative politics curriculum in the Department, the course addresses non-U.S. political topics and emphasizes foreign-made films. During Spring Semester 2007, the course will focus on the regions and countries of Europe (Soviet Union, Georgia, Greece, and Germany), Latin America (Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico), and Africa (Kenya, Algeria, Cameroon, and Senegal).
ADVISORY: The films used in this course address adult themes and some contain profanity, sexual situations, and/or partial nudity. If you do not wish to view films containing such material, DO NOT ENROLL IN THIS COURSE. PLS 305 is an elective course; you do not need it to complete the political science major or minor. The films have been selected specifically for their pertinence to course themes. Students are expected to view all of the films. |
Any student wishing to enroll in PLS 305 must first complete the prerequisite course--PLS 205.
Course Assignments
Course requirements include three exams and class participation.

Additional Resources
A wealth of information about films (political and otherwise) is available through the World Wide Web. An excellent place to start is with the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). IMDb is owned by Amazon.com and links to its web site, allowing you to look for books related to a particular film. Another very good resource is the web site of Facets Multi-Media, a major video and film distributor.
