A rectangle, R, has its shorter side of length 1.  See the figure (not to scale) on the left.

(a) When a 1×1 square (in yellow) is removed from the end of R, the result is another rectangle R' (in red) similar to R.  What is the length of the longer side of R?  

(b) Phooey, I was wrong.  The rectangle R' is not similar to R; however, if we repeat the process and remove a second square from the end of R', the now-resulting rectangle is similar to R.  What is the length of the longer side of R?
