Solution to Problem 73

Congratulations to this week's winners

Nathan Pauli, Ray Kremer, Shaun Lewis

Correct solutions were submitted by Alan Zimmermann, Robert McQuaid, Tim Kelley, Ron Welch, Cyril Terakopiantz, Philippe Fondanaiche, Fabrice de Biasi.

All correct submissions were a variation on the following, which was taken from Al Zimmermann's solution.

I would advise trying to get a head start on the moster.  Do this by swimming straight toward the shore along a radial path to a distance 1/4 times the pond's radius.  Once there, swim along the circumference of an imaginary circle concentric with the pond until you are exactly opposite the monster.  You can achieve this since you have a higher "angular velocity" than the monster.  Once you are opposite her, swim for the nearest point on the shore.  You will get there first because you have to travel less than one-quarter of the distance which the monster has to travel.
